Abstract The pandemic has accelerated the shift of ESG away from the sidelines to the centre. ESG is no longer a choice but a duty resulting in permanent changes to company work practices and corporate accountability. Organisations must rise to the challenge by adopting advanced technologies to navigate the ever-evolving ESG landscape. Incorporating AI and machine learning into an ESG-focused Digital Twin enables the automation of various operation and maintenance tasks, including data collection, analysis, visualisation and ESG reporting. Through utilising an AI-enabled Digital Twin, intelligent applications can be built to tackle the challenges faced by facility managers ranging from energy saving and maintenance optimisation to space utilisation and security monitoring. An AI-powered Digital Twin optimises building functionalities holistically to address the urgent needs of property owners, facility managers and building occupants. Property owners benefit from enhanced visibility, enabling closer tracking of building health to facilitate portfolio valuation and risk management. Meanwhile, facility managers can leverage a comprehensive view of building performance, allowing for automated fault detection and real-time monitoring of data quality, energy efficiency and control stability. Moreover, incorporating big data analytics into indoor environmental quality (IEQ) measurements helps create healthier workplaces in optimising occupant’s comfort and well-being. Given the importance of meeting ESG requirements for business success, the deployment of AI-enabled Digital Twin technology is essential, and this will be discussed in detail from the perspectives of big data collection (IoT), data processing (Data Lake), data analytics (AI Machine Learning), ESG-focused visualisation and smart facility management.
